The bachelor's button is one of the easiest flowers to grow, in fact they require virtually no care at all. They grow to heights of up to three feet and produce a colourful flower that can brighten up any garden. They are ideal for growing in temperate climates, and do best when planted in beds.
Bachelor's buttons are usually grown directly from their seeds which can be planted in the early spring. This will allow the flower to bloom early in the summer, usually amongst the first in your garden. If you live in an area that doesn't get a lot of frost it is also possible to plant them in the fall so that they bloom in the spring. The flowers will bloom about three months after they have been planted an will last for about a month. The seeds should be planted about a quarter inch deep and spaced at intervals of about one inch. It is important to make sure that they are properly covered, the seeds need total darkness.
Despite being an annual there is still a fairly good chance that after planting bachelor's buttons once they will return year after year. Like most plants they drop their seeds in order to ensure their survival. Generally it is a good idea to prune the dying flowers to help the new flowers to bloom, however near the end of the season it is a good idea to let the flowers die naturally. This is when the flowers will drop their seeds so that new plants can grow.
